The Kautilya Philosophy Part-14

The Kautilya Philosophy Part-14

Welcome to the podcast on The Kautilya Unleashed Series by Dr. C.T. William. Welcome to episode number fourteen.

Thank you all for your massive support for my Kautilya series. Now, the mystery behind Kautilya’s philosophy is discussed.

Arthashastra has three authentic and original editions to its credit. One edition was published in 1906 in the Indian Antiquary by the Mysore Shyamasasthrikal. The second edition was published through the Punjab Sanskrit Series written by Dr. Julius Jolly in 1926 and the third edition was from Trivandrum, written by Mahamahopadhyayan Dr. Ganapathi Sasthrikal during 1924-1925.

Arthashastra has been acclaimed as an effective panacea to energise and stabilise the state administration or any organisational administration, subject to certain political and geographical limitations. The cultural composition of this panacea includes mainly the philosophy of Prithvilabham (Acquisition) and Prithvipalanam (Retention) of what is acquired.

According to Kautilya, Prithvi is the money (Artha) or any equivalent material resources such as territory or land. In the modern management point of view, Prithvi is the other form of people force or human resources. “The people of a society, whatever their Varna or stage of life, will follow their Dharma and pursue with devotion their occupations, if they are protected by the King and just use of Dhanda [coercion and punishment]” {Bk.1.Ch4.Vs.16.}.

The dignity of human labour and the value of human resources are seen accounted for, when the King addresses the soldiers that he too, like others draws salary for the service done to the state. Hence he should also share the same status with them. This is exactly the essence of Human Resource Management. Watch podcast
