Today, we discuss Kautilya’s practical theories of economics and administration.

The book, known for its practical theories of economics and administration, mainly concentrates on the making of an able King, Kingdom and a perfect patriotic welfare state.  Kautilya says, “There cannot be a country without people and there is no Kingdom without a country” {Bk.13.Ch.4.Vs.5.}. Kautilya further explains, “In the interests of the prosperity of the country, a King should be diligent in foreseeing the possibility of calamities, try to avert them before they arise, overcome those which happen, remove all obstructions to economic activity and prevent loss of revenue to the state” {Bk.8.Ch.4.Vs.50, 21}. The result of these patriotic and pragmatic visions was the emergence of the Chandragupta Maurya, the King and a diligent foreseer; the “Gem of Indian history” and the welfare state; Watch Video

Kautilya had his higher education from the well-known Learning Centre Thakshasila of ancient India.  At Thakshasila he learnt Science, Philosophy, Ayurveda, Grammar of various languages, Mathematics, Econo mics, Astrology, Geography, Astronomy, Surgery, Agriculture, Archery and Ancient and Modern sciences. It was the exceptional skills that he learnt from Thakshasila enabled him to expel the cruel autocrat Dhananadha, the King of Nandha dynasty who has imposed drastic hardships and atrocities on the people of the country. The effective weapon animated in human form; he sharpened and targeted for expelling Dhananadha was, Chandragupta Maurya. Kautilya, as per historical records, has trained Chandragupta Maurya for a period of eight years. The training was based on the strategic philosophy of Arthashastra and he was sociologically, psychologically and physically and metaphysically armed enough to charge the Dhananadha to uproot the whole Nandha dynasty.
