Kautilya-The King Maker of Chandragupta Maurya

Kautilya-The King Maker of Chandragupta Maurya

Kautilya was the first pragmatic diplomat and an exceptional intellectual giant who invested strenuous intellectual effort in the areas of Philosophy, Political diplomacy, Political science, Political economics, Law, Human Resource Management and Development, Political Administration, Physics, Metaphysics, Psychology, Logic and other Moral sciences. His tremendous research outputs have optimised the Return On Investment (ROI). He has codified all written and unwritten forms of historical and pre-historical records and edited those scattered fragments of royal sciences and knowledge, unearthed from the history of ancient India. The codified and edited records are then analysed. The analytical findings were skillfully woven to form the well-known book Arthashastra; a kaleidoscope that reflects the multidimensional cause-and-effect phenomenon of human beings, society, rites, rituals, culture, philosophy, administration, laws, politics, and economics of ancient India. History claims that Kautilya, the father of political administration and the author of Arthashastra, was the first pragmatic political diplomat who transformed Chandragupta, the founder of the Maurya dynasty, into the great emperor of Aryavartha. Ancient Indian history marks the age of Chandragupta as the indelible and eventful golden age of political administration and political economics. No doubt, the cerebral chip behind this historic golden age is the phenomenal management processor and the first oriental management guru, Kautilya.

The couplet cited above from Vayu Purana supports the historical fact that Kautilya lived during the age of Chandragupta Maurya, and he was the mastermind behind the dynamic animation of the Great Chandragupta Maurya. Supporting the fact, Dr. R. Shama shastry, the great explorer of Arthashastra and the translator of the English version (Kau tilya’s Arthashastra, The Indian Antiquary, A Journal Of Oriental Research, Vol. XXXIV, 1905) quotes a prediction from the Vishnu Purana 4th canto, 24th chapter, regarding the fantastic appearance of Kautilya. This prediction, incidentally, was scribed fifty centuries ago, nearly 2700 years before this political heavyweight and man of destiny was to appear. The prediction informs us: “(First) Mahapadma, then his sons-only nine in number-will be the lords of the earth for a hundred years. A Brahmin named Kautilya will slay these Nandas. On their death, the Mauryas will enjoy the earth. Kautilya himself will install Chandragupta on the throne. His son will be Bindusara and his son will be Ashokavardhana.” Thus, he became the most respected king-maker the world has ever seen. Similar prophecies are also repeated in the Bhagavata, VayuPurana and Matsya Purana.
